This concert opens a door onto the multifaceted and very rich Afghan musical heritage.

The people of Afghanistan have a deep love of birdsong. They know that some birds are stimulated to sing by hearing music and for many of them, the sound of birdsong added to music is the acme of musical enjoyment. Traditional musicians will sing and play on the Herati dutar, rubab and tabla and express their love of birdsong, the nightingale's passion for the rose in Sufi poetry and the beautiful interaction between the verbal mnemonics of the tabla and birdsong.

The programme will consist of a mixture of traditional Afghan folk and classical music, with musicians from Afghanistan playing alongside performers from the UK. The highlight of the performance will be an interaction between Ustad Arif and a recording of nightingale song in which he explores in terms of drumming mnemonics and tabla playing.
